New Bedford, Massachusetts 02744
Thank you for a great event!
6:00 PM to 2:00 AM
Your $99 ticket includes dinner, lectures, and hours of ghost investigating in this historic fort, its grounds, and bunkers!
After an incredible amount of activity last October, we’re back! Civil War-era sites are notorious for their historic haunts. Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Chickamauga — the ghosts of those who gave their lives in the War Between the States still roam those battlefields with regularity.
But who knew the SouthCoast had its own Civil War-era haunting right in New Bedford?
Although there had been a beacon in place in the spot since 1797, it wasn’t until 1857 that the former Edward Wing Howland Farm on Clark’s Point was purchased and turned into a military fort.
During the Civil War, Confederate ships parked in Buzzards’ Bay, wreaking havoc on New Bedford’s vital whaling industry. The building of Fort Taber (later renamed Fort Rodman in 1898 after Lieutenant Colonel William Rodman, a New Bedford native who died in the Civil War) began in response, although construction halted in 1871 and the fort was never completed as it was originally planned.
The 47-acre site has been a city park since the 1970s, and the ghost stories have rolled in over the years. From tales of spectral soldiers running drills inside the fort itself to the phantom mechanic seen working on the World War II-era Sherman tank that sits on the grounds, the Fort Taber Park is an area rich with history as well as hauntings. Shadow figures are seen roaming throughout the fort and its numerous batteries, including the Battery Milliken, which stretches three stories underground. Ghostly lights and footsteps have been reported throughout the complex.
With the granite to construct the fort being shipped in from all over, and with a museum full of military artifacts, who knows how many other ghosts could be on patrol at Fort Taber?
Come Legend Trip with us on June 22 and find out! As with all Legend Trips Events, a portion of each ticket sale goes to keep this historic fort in operation.
